RadioMedia Mission and Services

RadioMedia is both a marketing company and an advocacy organization of the radio industry.  The official name of RadioMedia is The Association of Finnish Broadcasters (Suomen Radioiden Liitto SRL ry.). RadioMedia is the market name for the association.

Marketing and sales

RadioMedia aims to increase the ad spenditure on radio in Finland by developing radio advertising expertise within the radio industry and among advertisers as well as advertising buyers, planners and producers.

RadioMedia provides advertising buyers and planners an independent and impartial viewpoint to the field of radio: RadioMedia is a key strategic advisor, whether the question is about specifying target groups, choosing between different medias or fine tuning spots of a single campaign. RadioMedia doesn’t sell radio advertising, but it gives free solutions and help with all questions concerning radio.

RadioMedia is one of the subscribers of National Radio Survey produced by Finnpanel Oy. We publish up to date  outlines about the listener numbers and their profiles of all radio stations. You can also find the contact information and broadcast frequencies across Finland on our website.

RadioMedia produces marketing and information services for all radio broadcasters while it is also the leading developer and coordinator of the radio industry research. We have collected the most interesting and recent results in the research section.

Advocacy services

RadioMedia looks after the interest of private and commercial radio broadcasters. According to its regulations ”the objective of the association is to supervise the rights and benefits of its members radio broadcasting, strengthen their position, raise the level of quality and encourage cooperation between the private radio companies with all matters concerning broadcasting. Since the beginning of 2003 RadioMedia/The Association of Finnish Broadcasters has been a member of The Federation of the Finnish Media Industry (Finnmedia).

The Association of Finnish Local Radio Stations was founded in 1983. Its objective was to launch private radio broadcasting in Finland in addition to national public service monopoly YLE. The mission succeeded: The Council of State granted the first private licenses 27. January 1985. During the year 1985, 18 radio stations started broadcasting with the experimental two-year licenses. The first local radio Radio Lakeus started broadcasting in Nivala 27. April 1985.

Since 1985, overall radio listening increased considerably in Finland. The number of radio stations multiplied along with commercial broadcasting and radio’s share of the total time spent on media increased as well.

As the private radio broadcasting was expanding, the association was also renamed The Association of Finnish Broadcasters (Suomen Radioiden Liitto SRL ry) in 1997. The association established a marketing company RAB Finland OY in 1999. RAB Finland was united to the association 1. January 2009 and since then it has used the market name RadioMedia. Radiomedia hosts 54 member stations that operate a total of about 320 frequencies. It has 30 member organizations, which measured by their net sales constitute nearly 100 % of the industry’s revenue.

RadioMedia looks after its members interests also through an international organization. It is a member of The Federation of Finnish Media and AER (Association of European Radios). AER is a key association for promoting private radio broadcasters’ interests in Europe.

The Finnish radio landscape and RadioMedia are facing the challenge of improving the service for a large audience and advertisers. Extensive, effective and close co-operation between the member stations is crucial in order to create developing and successful radio broadcasting in Finland.

Radiomedia hosts 54 member stations: 10 stations are national or half-national and 44 local radio stations.
